The 6 selection factors of the Point System for Migration to Canada

If you are thinking about immigrating to Canada, then it is important to be aware of the point system used to qualify. Canada’s point system attempts to provide  a comprehensive ranking with six selection factors. The selection factors include Language skills, Education, Experience, Age, Adaptability and a category referred to as Arranged Employment in Canada. To migrate under the Federal Skilled Worker Program, candidates require a score of 67 out of the possible 100. Below we breakdown each factor.

Language Skills (The highest possible point score is 28)

Migrants should have the ability to communicate effectively in either English or French. The maximum score under this factor is 28 points that are awarded for listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Applicants need to take a test approved by the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC).

Education (The highest possible point score is 30)

For one to get an education point, applicants need to prove that they have attested certificates and/or diplomas that are equalivalent to a simmilar Canadian qualification. Those who have attained one and two-year post-secondary education qualification get a score of 15 points. Individuals with more than three years post-secondary education get a score of 30 points. Those with a professional qualification that requires licensing by the provisional regulatory organization earn 30 points.

Experience (The highest possible point score is 15)

Experience is awarded based on the number of years that an individual has spent in full-time work. An individual with one year of experience earns 9 points, 2-3 year experience gets you 11 points, and those with more than six years of experience get 15 points.

Age (The highest possible point score is 12)

The age factor points are determined by the immigration central office upon receiving the application. Generally, the younger you are, the more points you will earn. Those under the age of 18 years get zero points while those from the age of 18 years to 35 years get 12 points. From the age of 36 years to 46 years, the points depreciate. Those above the age of 47 years receive no points.

Arranged Employment in Canada (The highest possible point score is 10)

These points are awarded if the applicant has full-time and permanent employment offer from a Canadian based employer. It is vital to receiv an offer before applying for migration.

Adaptability (The highest possible point score is 10)

If one has a spouse or common-law partner who will migrate with them, this can earn points. The highest point score one can get under this factor is 10.
