Language skills

Maximum 28 points

It is essential that you can speak one or both of Canada’s main languages – English and French. Your ability will be assessed via:

  • The Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB). This is an assessment for your ability to write, read, listen and speak English. The CLB standard reflects your knowledge of basic, intermediate and advanced English. Points will be calculated on this basis. You must receive a minimum level of CLB 7 for one official language in all four language areas. To earn points for a second language, you must receive a minimum level of CLB 5 in all four language areas.
  • Niveaux de Competence Linguistique Canadiens (NCLC). This is an assessment for your ability to speak write, read, listen and speak French. The NCLC standard reflects your knowledge of basic, intermediate and advanced French. Points will be calculated on this basis. You must receive a minimum level of NCLC 7 for one official language in all four language areas. To earn points for a second language, you must receive a minimum level of NCLC 5 in all four language areas.

Education

Maximum 25 points

For immigration, if you have studied at a foreign institution, you will require an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA). This must be from a designated organisation, demonstrating that your educational qualifications equate to a completed certificate, diploma or degree from a Canadian secondary (high school) and post-secondary institution.

Work Experience

Maximum 15 points

You will earn points for the number of years you have undertaken full-time, paid work (a minimum of 30 hours per week, or an equal number of part-time (15 years per week for 24 months) at skill type 0, or skill levels A or B of the 2016 version of the National Occupational Classification (NOC).

For immigration purposes, these skill levels consist of
  • Skill Type 0 (zero): Management roles such as restaurant managers, mine managers or shore captains (fishing).
  • Skill Type A: Professional roles that require a university degree such as doctors, dentists and architects.
  • Skill Type B: Technical roles and skilled trades that generally require a college diploma or training as an apprentice such as chefs, plumbers and electricians.

Age

Maximum 12 points

You will earn points based on your age on the day we receive your application.

Arranged Employment

Maximum 10 points

You will earn points if you have received a job offer of at least 1 year from a Canadian employer. The job offer must have been received prior to your application as a Federal Skilled Worker. A valid job offer must be for continuous full-time, paid work (minimum of 30 hours per week) and in an occupation listed as Skill Type 0, A or B of the NOC. It can not be seasonal work.

Adaptability

Maximum 10 points

You and your spouse, or common on-law partner, can earn points by demonstrating your ability to adapt to settling in Canada. These are based on

  • Language level (5 points). Your spouse or common in-law has a language level in either French or English at CLB 4 level in all four language abilities (speaking, listening, reading and writing). You will need to submit your partners test results from an approved agency when you apply. These are valid for 2 years after the date of your test result.
  • Previous studies in Canada (5 points). You, your spouse or common in-law have completed at least 2 academic years of full-time study (at least 15 hours per week) at a secondary or post-education school in Canada. The program must have been at least 2 years in duration. You and/or your partner must have remained in good academic standing during that time.
  • Your past work in Canada (10 points). You have undertaken at least one year of full-time work in Canada. It must be in Skill Type 0 or Skill Levels A or B of the NOC, and you received a valid work permit or were authorised to work in Canada.
  • Your spouse or common in law’s past work in Canada (5 points): Your partner has undertaken at last one year of full time work in Canada, and they received a valid work permit or were authorised to work in Canada.
  • You, your spouse or common in-law have relatives living in Canada (5 points). The relative must be at least 18 years of age and a permanent resident or Canadian citizen. The relative must be a parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, a sibling of you or spouse, an aunt or uncle of you or your spouse, a niece or nephew of you or your spouse.

Final Score

Once you have completed your application, a final score will be calculated based on the necessary criteria and your eligibility.
